A HABESHA’S HABIT PROCESS

To convey something unfamiliar, you first need to understand its key traits. For injera, that meant tactility, how to make it and its distinctive texture rife with holes.

I generated as many connections to injera as I could exploring things it reminds me of, things that are the opposite and things that could be somewhat related. This evolved into experiments with different ways of presenting the family tree — through poetry, sound, tactility, and visual layout. After this series of iterations - A publication felt like the most cohesive way to bring these elements together.

Working with technicians, I tested various card stocks, binding techniques and bookcloths to ensure the piece had the right tactile quality. A French-fold with perfect binding allowed imagery and cut-outs to sit seamlessly side by side, enhancing both interactivity and narrative flow.
